Chris Abeyta has been a GED instructor, college advisor and bilingual educator at the Santa Fe Community College since 1984. He is a native Santa Fean, musician and community activist. He is the founder (1973) and performer of the popular local band Lumbre del Sol. Chris has taught guitar workshops for Outside In since 1998. Many of his longer-term students have advanced from having never held a guitar to a degree that they now seriously consider music as a career opportunity. He has a strong dedication to teaching and has been called a natural born educator and mentor. He has won numerous achievement awards Chris has been called a natural born educator and mentor. He was a recipient of the 1997 Ten Who Make a Difference in Northern New Mexico award from The Santa Fe New Mexican, and has been an Arts Commissioner for the City of Santa Fe Arts Commission. He is a Board Member of Ayudantes, a drug treatment program in New Mexico. Chris also gives guitar instruction at a local teen center, Warehouse 21. He was the 2002 recipient of the Mayor’s Recognition Award for Excellence in The Arts for Music and Literature. MAJOR
