VISUAL ARTS with Fine Arts for Children & Teens (FACT) As of 2005, Outside In is now collaborating with another non-profit organization, Fine Arts for Children & Teens which bring art-making opportunities to under-served and at-risk youth who otherwise might not have access to the life-long benefits that high-quality arts learning provides. Their programs provide a model for community-based arts education, and are offered to youth throughout the community regardless of their economic circumstances. Outside In is now utilizing the resources of this organization and thereby immensely upgrading our visual arts component by providing professional quality visual arts instruction. This collaboration will also extend to the Santa Fe Art Institute and will culminate this summer with an exhibition of youth artwork at the Institute. This project is an outgrowth of a successful collaboration with SITE Santa Fe and the Capitol Art Foundation, where participants of our Youth with Promise Program both exhibited their artwork in the State Capitol building and performed for over 100 people at the opening in May 2003. We found that this collaboration was beneficial for everyone concerned, and gave the youth artists and performers a great sense of accomplishment and a boost to their self-esteem. We are expecting that this upcoming collaboration will provide even more teens with access to artist mentors and the opportunity to be recognized for their efforts. Keelan Wackman and Gary Meyers of Fine Arts for Children and Teens - Visual Arts Instruction Keelan is the Program Director of Fine Arts for Children and Teens. She is responsible for developing program curriculum and assessments, coordinating program activities, serving as program liaison to school sites, and scheduling and preparing FACT’s year-round, rotating student exhibitions. As a mixed media artist herself, she is extremely versatile as an art instructor. Ms. Wackman received her B.F.A. in Studio Art, with a minor in art history, from the College of Santa Fe in 2001. She has been teaching art for over eight years, and her professional experience includes gallery administration, museum docent work, and studio assistant to artists over the last three years. She is currently working toward her K-12 teaching certification at the Santa Fe Community College. Gary is a native New Mexican and a graduate of Santa Fe High School. He received his M.A. in Art Education from the University of New Mexico. He returned to Santa Fe High School, where he taught art for 25 years. Retiring from the public schools in January 2002, this award-winning, much-beloved art instructor now teaches teen students in Fine Arts for Children and Teens programs. The inclusion of Keelan and Gary in the Youth with Promise program
is already having a dramatic impact upon the youth that we serve. MAJOR
